Background

algaocars have been in the business of mining and export of iron ore for the past fifty years. The world speaks today of globalisation and India is catching up with this trend. We, however, emerged on the global scene in 1952 as a partnership firm when the hunger for steel was felt world-wide in the aftermath of World War II.

Our founder, the late Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Vasudev M Salgaocar was a visionary of exceptional caliber, who looked beyond the horizons of the Arabian Sea from the natural rocks of the Mormugao Harbour on the west coast of India. His determination matched the rocks of the high hills of his native land - Goa, which was then ruled from distant Portugal although the rest of India had already become a free democracy.

The House of Salgaocars was a trading firm since 1942 which had made its mark in imports of a variety of consumables and in stevedoring. The growing international market for iron and steel triggered Salgaocars into the mining belt of Goa. The first consignment of 16,500 tons of iron ore left the shores of Goa in 1952. We never looked back from there. Mechanisation of the mines was started in the very first decade and has been an ongoing process ever since. Screening plants were established over the years. The modern technology of beneficiation of ore was started in 1980 in order to enlarge the range of minable reserves for exports.

A fleet of barges, with a capacity of 20,500 tons per day, has been carrying ore from the loading point at Vagus in the hinterland of Goa to the Mormugao harbour over the serene waters of the Mandovi and Zuari. Vagus, in turn, is the destination of hundreds of trucks that transport ore from the mines to this location. At Mormugao harbour, our shipment is facilitated by our own transhipper M V Swatirani with a loading capacity of 1,500 tons per hour.

The process of computerisation started with the establishment of the EDP Centre in 1976 and today we have an enterprise-wide integrated information system. We are supported by Client/Server based information system with centralised Oracle database on the latest SUN Enterprise server. The head office at Vasco is directly connected through WAN to its major minning locations sharing updated operational and MIS data.

Our emphasis on quality standards has resulted in obtaining ISO 9001:2000 Certificate and our commitment to the environment has been recognized in ISO 14001 Certificate.

Our efforts in diversification have taken us from moving iron ore to meeting the requirements of people on the move: hospitality, tourism and travels . We have set up the Goa Marriott Resorts near Panaji run by the Marriott chain and Hotel La Paz Gardens near the Mormugao Harbour.

The vision of our founder, the late Mr. V M Salgaocar, continues to inspire us in the highly competitive globalised economy. And our eventful past has prepared us for a challenging present and a promising future.
