M Salgaocar & Brother Private Limited, our flagship company,
is a leader in the Iron Ore business in Goa on the West Coast
of India. It has been in the mining business for over 50 years.
The gigantic task of mining operations calls for military
precision in planning the logistics. We have a planned integrated
approach to our business process which encompasses surveying,
extracting, processing, transporting by over 250 trucks and
a fleet of barges in the rivers, transhipping and handling
at Berth No 9 at the Mormugao Port. The demand projection
is the main guiding criterion from the planning level right
up to the shipment stage. Be it the extraction of ore at the
mines or the value adding process at the Dry Screening Plants
and the Beneficiation Plant or the transportation by trucks
on hilly roads and by barges in the rivers - each activity
is efficiently carried out with regular deployment, allocation
and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
At present our mining activities are concentrated in Velguem/Surla,
Sigao and Sancordem, which are within a radius of 25 kms from
the barge loading facility at Vagus. The area covered by the
company's mining concessions is being constantly surveyed
and assessed by our team of geologists. The samples collected
are analysed at the company's Analytical Laboratory and the
results evaluated for decision making. Company's production
performance at the mines is guided by the anticipated commitments
for exports. Total material extraction in the past few years
has varied between 5 to 7 million tons per annum. The rejects
are systematically dumped with future exploitation possibilities
in mind. Plantation programmes are carried out to restore
greenery.
We have carved a niche for ourselves in the world steel market
by being one of the principal suppliers of iron ore to Nippon
Steel Corporation, a company of giant status. Over the years
our standing at the international level has thrown many new
markets. We have been doing business with POSCO, another gigantic
company. We export more than 2 million tons of iron ore mainly
to these two principal and long standing customers besides
others.
Salgaocars own and operate a modern transhipper M V SWATIRANI,
fitted with sophisticated deck machinery comprising of conveyor
systems cranes and having an iron ore loading rated capacity
of 1,500 tons per hour. This vessel makes alongside large
ocean going carriers and loads annually about 1.5 million
tons of iron ore into them from barges which are moved alongside.
It may be noted that M V SWATIRANI has achieved a loading
rate of 29,000 tons in a single day and can load vessels of
60,000 DWT to 250,000 DWT.
The company operates a fleet of four barges having a deadweight
tonnage of 8000, which is augmented as and when required by
ten barges on contract having capacity of 12,500, thereby
taking the total barge capacity to 20,500 tons for transporting
ore from loading station at Vagus to the Mormugao port.
We are supported by an enterprise wide Client/Server based
integrated information system with centralised Oracle database
on the latest SUN Enterprise server. The head office at Vasco
is directly connected through WAN to its major minning locations
sharing updated operational and MIS data.
